WAL-MART Documentary Movie

Reviews

By Paul Chambers December 1, 2005

A new documentary, "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price," is highly critical of the world's largest retail corporation. The film recently became available on DVD. It uses interviews and news reports, like this reporter talking about how Wal-Mart failed to combat crime in its own parking lots.

video clip "....A Wal-Mart study showed that 80-percent of crime at Wal-mart locations occurred in the parking lot. And, when the company added roving patrols at several sites the crime rate dropped to as low as zero."

The film claims that Wal-Mart tried to keep the study results out of several lawsuits filed against the company by crime victims. Of course, the film also covers other topics like the economic impact Wal-Mart has on Mom and Pop businesses and the way the company cracks down on union organizing activities. There's even some surprising information on the charitable giving habits of the Walton family. The film is definitely skewed against the company, but it's story is well-told and offers much food for thought. Three stars.
